Chirny Presents #32 - A Candlelight Concert (7th July)
On July 7th, experience candlelight.
You’ve no doubt experienced candlelight before, in your bath, or in your home, or when the stove caught fire at 3am.
Now, at Christchurch’s iconic Arts Centre, you can experience candlelight once more, against the beautiful backdrop of a journey through the history of classical music, the music we all had to listen to before the discovery of air horns and sirens.
That’s right, it’s not just candles. It’s music, too.
Have all your questions answered – “Why do the piano keys all make different noises even though they look exactly the same?” and “What is a Debussy”?” – as you listen to some of history’s most overplayed and most underplayed pieces; the famous, and the forgotten*.
(*Not completely forgotten, we do still know how to play them.)
Hear performances by Christchurch’s very own Anna Maximova and Mark Chirnside, in the dancing, flickering firelight of our real electric candles.
Unlike some concerts, we’re not funded by a soulless multinational corporation blindly allocating capital around the world for profit under the vague guise of a boutique local production.
This is a community event, made and paid for by local artists right here in Christchurch. When you buy a ticket, your money won’t end up in an offshore bank account. Your money will support more events like this, and more candles. Many more candles. Once we have enough candles, you won’t be able to stop us.
We promise you won’t be disappointed, and if you are, you’re basically saying that some of history’s most revered artists aren’t great and you wouldn’t want anyone to know that.
So come along, enjoy, bask in the candlelight, and find out which corrupt statesperson funded Mozart, why so much of the classical music we have today is thanks to banking, and what all of this has to do with Twilight.
We can’t wait to see you, dimly, under the candlelight.
